Rae

founder / designer
"Hey, I’m Rae.

I started Artifact in 2018 in San Francisco, after years in real estate staging and furniture retail and realizing most people were stuck between soulless budget furniture or ultra-expensive design services. I wanted something in the middle: beautiful, high-quality furniture with a custom, human design experience that’s easy, fast, and actually fun.

Artifact was born in California but built for the way people move today. We use smart tech behind the scenes to keep things seamless, but we never lose the human touch. No algorithms or cookie-cutter spaces, just real conversations, curated collections, and thoughtful design made for you.

Since we launched, we’ve helped furnish 500+ homes across the U.S., from pro athletes in penthouses to grads decorating their first apartments, to families relocating from around the world. Every move is different, and that’s what keeps it exciting.

I’ve moved a lot, first solo, now with my three-year-old son, Goldie, and my husband, Joseph (a.k.a. Jomo), a professional big wave surfer and audiologist. We split our time between California and South Africa, always chasing waves, sunshine, and a beautiful life together. We love our work, but we love surfing and our family even more.

I’m also a total freak about dimensions (seriously, try me), and I love meeting new people, traveling, connecting, learning from other cultures. That love of movement and curiosity is at the core of Artifact. Whether you’re staying a year or a lifetime, home should feel like your dreams coming true.

Our team is mostly women, based around the world, and we can work with any style, location, or vision. We keep things flexible, thoughtful, and personal.

Also, surfing is life. That feeling of flow, freedom, and rhythm? That’s what we bring to every move."

Gina

Director / designer
"I’ve been with Artifact Homes for the last 5-6 years, working across both logistics and design to help bring each project to life from start to finish.

My role bridges the creative and the practical—I’m involved in everything from planning and coordination to selecting pieces that truly reflect the client’s vision.

I love the process of problem solving, pulling the details together, and creating a space that feels not just beautiful, but meaningful and lived-in.

I live in a coastal town in South Africa, where the natural surroundings and easy rhythm of daily life have shaped my design aesthetic: earthy, contemporary, and rooted in simplicity.

I’ve been surfing most of my life and love spending time creating—through food, writing, design, or whatever inspires me in the moment.

That creative energy, paired with a calm and solution-focused mindset, is something I bring to every project I work on.

I love to create a supportive environment where clients can get in on the design process. Whether it’s a compact urban space or a large family home, I’m driven by the belief that good design should feel personal, grounded, and quietly transformative."

Ruth

designer
"Hi, I’m Ruth.

I fell in love with Artifact right away - the team, the work, and the joy of helping people love their homes.

I’m based in South Africa, where I’ve lived all my life, and I’ve always had a deep love for design - especially the fun, colorful and quirky.

At Artifact, I get to combine that love of design with something I care about just as much: people. I love the calls where we get to connect, figure out what someone really needs, and create something beautiful and personal together.

Outside of Artifact, I’m an artist - and if it’s a Saturday, you’ll probably find me painting a wall somewhere.

I live by the sea with my husband and our two small kids, and I know firsthand how much a well-designed space can support the harmony of life."

Amber

designer
"Hi! I’m Amber.

From a young age, I've always had a passion for creating spaces that feel comfortable and safe. I remember rearranging my room frequently and building little hideaways outside, using whatever I could find in the garden.

What started as a playful activity gradually evolved into a true calling, eventually leading me to graduate from interior design school.

I believe interior design begins with the natural world—nature gets it right every time. Whenever I travel, I love seeing how different cultures interpret this relationship between space and nature.

For the past eight years, I’ve called Southern Spain home, though my roots are in South Africa. As I have moved around a lot over the years, I have created and said goodbye to many houses and the memories made in them. I understand the challenges that come along with uprooting your life and making a fresh start somewhere else.

These days, “home” is simply where my husband, my baby girl, two Australian shepherds and waves are!

Having recently joined Artifact, I’m mostly excited about the people I get to meet and work alongside. Being part of this dynamic team represents a unique opportunity to connect with others from around the world, and to share stories and ideas.

Ultimately, it provides a way to easily create a safe and comfortable place for people - a sense of grounding - which is essential in the day and age we live in."

Crystal

Executive assistant
"Hey, I’m Crystal.

I have a BA degree in Creative Brand Communications and I’m currently on my last year of my Diploma in Small Business Management and Entrepreneurship.

I'm passionate about creativity, strategy, and supporting meaningful work with purpose and direction.

I'm also a professional surfer, with 2 South African Women’s Longboard Open Titles and 3 South African Shortboard Titles. I’ve been the #1 ranked longboard surfer in Africa since 2018 and have represented the continent at an international level.

I'm originally from St. Francis Bay, and I’d describe myself as a true waterwoman and Creative. Outside of surfing, I’m also an artist and someone who values community, intentional living, creativity, and building brands or spaces that are aligned with strong values."
